Like a world-class athlete, an artist is hard wired to reach a goal and then,
having achieved it, to raise the bar even higher, always pushing to perform at
top capacity, crafting a personal best.
Poppa E knows this. He is blessed with a relentless spirit that fuels him.
"Everything that I do creatively has to make me work harder and hopefully
steer me in a direction I've never been before," he explains. "If it's easy, then
the excitement is gone because I don't like to be bored and comfortable when it
comes to my music. I like to challenge myself and all those around me to get
the very best creatively."
That creativity took center stage on Poppa E's 2006 album, "Crossroads," which
earned him an International Academy of Independent Artists nomination for
"Best Blues Song of 2008," confirming his status as one of the blues premier
songwriters, producers and singers. With hits like "Terraplane Blues" and
"Crossroads," Poppa E record sales soared, and he headlined sold-out tours in
the United States, Europe and the Orient, and presented the full range of his
artistic vision, redefining himself in the process. So, how do you top a personal
best?
Poppa E's answer is "Heaven's Gate," executive produced by Poppa E for Black
Owl Music Group. "Heaven's Gate" is a celebration and a milestone. Soulfully
deep, emotionally expansive, musically far reaching and filled with
arrangements, rhythms and lyrics that are adult, smart and just flat out soulful,
"Heaven's Gate" is the sound of an artist raising the bar.
"Heaven's Gate," scheduled for release in early 2009, was brought to fruition by
Poppa E, who co-wrote and co-produced the album's 15 songs, with the help of
some incredible artists and musicians like Hugh Hamilton and Gerry Lane of
West Cork, Ireland.
Since wrapping up his 2006 tour, Poppa E has kept up a whirlwind pace. In
2007, Poppa E made the stops in his "second home," Miami, and earned the
dubious distinction of "resident bluesman" for the famed Miami blues cabaret,
Tobacco Road. This year, 2008 also brought about another venture for Poppa E,
opening his own jazz and blues club in North Miami, Florida. Poppa E and his
longtime partner, Oshilaja Hemsley of London, England, have launched a
fashion line, which will make its debut later this year.
